Its stone structure is an integral part of the landscape and a key point for hikers heading to famous trails such as Orla Perć, Świnica, and Kościelec. However, opinions about it are sharply divided, prompting potential guests to carefully consider their expectations of a high-altitude alojamiento .

Location – the biggest and undisputed advantage

The main reason tourists choose this hostel is its strategic location. It’s an ideal base for exploring the high-mountainous part of the Tatra Mountains. The ability to start hiking early in the morning, without the need for hours of climbing from Zakopane, is invaluable, especially for those planning ambitious and long routes. The views from the hostel are unforgettable and, for many, sufficiently compensate for any inconvenience. The building itself, with its rich history dating back to the 1920s, adds a unique atmosphere. Guests have 24-hour access to boiling water, which is much appreciated in mountain conditions, as well as the possibility of renting board games and guitars.

Accommodation conditions: from satisfaction to frustration

Murowaniec offers multi-person habitaciones , ranging from two to ten people. The standard is typical for a mountain hut, but this is where the first major issues arise. One of the most frequently cited complaints, especially in room 13, is the 185 cm long beds. For taller guests, this means a sleepless night and a lack of comfort, a serious complaint considering the need to recharge before another day in the mountains. Another drawback is the insufficient number of electrical outlets in the multi-person rooms, which can be problematic given today’s need to charge electronic devices.

On the other hand, some guests praise the conditions, noting that the rooms are often warm and clean, and that the bathrooms are regularly cleaned. This shows that experiences can vary greatly, likely depending on the specific room and occupancy. This type of mountain hospedaje always involves some compromises, but the issue of the beds being too short seems to be a fundamental oversight.

Gastronomy: flavors that divide

The buffet in Murowaniec is another topic that stirs up strong emotions. Positive reviews include praise for the pizza, which is prepared on site, the delicious apple pie, and the traditional bigos. However, many tourists complain about the quality of the dishes served. Reviews include cold soup, dry bread, overcooked fries, and undercooked sausages. The quality of the food seems inconsistent.

The high prices, however, are undeniable. Tourists point out the cost of basic items, such as tea at 11 złoty per sachet or beer at 17 złoty. Small but irritating fees, such as 3 złoty for a sachet of mustard for a meal, reinforce the impression that the shelter is primarily profit-driven. For many people familiar with the realities of other shelters, such a pricing policy is difficult to accept.

Facility management and policy – the main axis of conflict

The most negative comments concern staff attitudes and the overall pricing policy. Many guests describe the service as rude, incompetent, and indifferent to reported issues. Reports indicate that complaints about short beds are dismissed, and attempts to clarify the situation end in arrogance from staff. This atmosphere makes guests feel unwelcome.

Another sticking point is the system of additional fees. Paid bedding (PLN 30) compared to the already high price of accommodation (up to PLN 150 for a bunk bed) is incomprehensible to many. Furthermore, if bedding is not provided, guests are not even provided with a blanket. However, the most controversial issue is the fee for using the restroom (PLN 4), even for tourists not staying overnight. In the mountains, where a shelter should serve as a safe haven, this practice is widely criticized and compared to the free, modern restroom facilities at other PTTK facilities. It’s also worth remembering that payments at the shelter are accepted only in cash, which can be problematic in a remote location without easy access to an ATM (although there is one on site). All these elements contribute to the image of a place that many tourists describe as a “money-making machine.”

Summary: Albergue with Two Faces

The PTTK Murowaniec mountain hut is a place full of contradictions. On the one hand, it offers what’s most valuable in the Tatras – an unparalleled location that opens the door to the most beautiful corners of the mountains. This isn’t a luxury resort or secluded villa , but a functional hostel for mountain enthusiasts. If proximity to the trails is your priority, and high prices, the risk of poor service, and spartan conditions aren’t an obstacle, Murowaniec remains a choice worth considering. However, those who also value a welcoming atmosphere, fair pricing, and basic comfort may be deeply disappointed. When choosing this hostel, it’s important to be aware of the compromise you’re making: you’re paying a high price for the location, but not necessarily for the quality of service and a positive experience.

The Murowaniec Mountain Hut on Hala Gąsienicowa: a legendary base camp in the Tatra Mountains.
