The Patyki Scout Camp, named after the Knights of the Order of the Smile, in Zelów is a facility that evokes extreme emotions: from warm nostalgia to sadness at its current state. For generations of scouts and youth, it was synonymous with summer adventure, a place full of laughter, learning, and relaxation in the bosom of nature. Today, however, this image belongs solely to the past. The center is permanently closed and, as one former visitor aptly put it, "has been devastated," making any search for any form of alojamiento impossible and pointless.

A Past Full of Scout Spirit

Located in a picturesque, forested area along the Bełchatów-Łask route, near the Pilsi River reservoir, the campsite was a key point in the Łódź region's scouting scene for years. Run by the ZHP Zelów Troop, it offered a simple yet functional hospedaje , perfectly suited to the needs of youth camps. It consisted of several wooden cabañas (camping cabins), a pavilion with additional sleeping quarters, and a tent base that could accommodate up to 150 people in the summer. This wasn't a luxury resort ; it was a true Scout-style albergue , where community, contact with nature, and independence were paramount.

The facility's patronage was exceptional – the Knights of the Order of the Smile. This international distinction, awarded to adults by children for their heart and joyful activities, gave the place a special atmosphere. The name suggested that it was a safe, friendly space, focused on the well-being of children, which certainly attracted organizers of summer camps and "green schools."

Infrastructure and Activities

The center, although seasonal (open from May to October), was bustling with activity. It had a dining room with a fireplace, a kitchen, and basic sanitary facilities. It hosted not only scout camps but also ecological gatherings, open-air painting workshops, and integration camps for children and youth with disabilities. Outside the summer season, the camp hosted participants in camps, hikes, and company meetings, demonstrating its versatility as a place offering basic living and recreational space.

Decline and Devastation

Unfortunately, the golden years of the station were gone forever. In the early 21st century, the center began to decline. Changes in ownership and a lack of investment led to its closure and continued devastation. Today, the area is a shadow of its former self. Photos and witness accounts confirm the sad state of the abandoned buildings, which have become targets for vandals and looters. It is no longer a place to rent a department or seek a vacation. Attempts to secure the area proved ineffective, and the abandoned buildings posed a real threat.

For safety reasons, the Zelów commune authorities made the final decision to demolish the remains of the station. At the end of 2022, heavy equipment arrived at the site to raze the decaying houses and pavilions. It was a symbolic end to an era. For those who remember this place from its heyday, the sight is painful and evokes memories of summer trips that will never return in this form.

Potential Future of the Area

Although the Patyki Scout Camp no longer exists, the area itself holds potential. After clearing the land, the Zelów commune plans to designate it for recreational and leisure purposes. Furthermore, a private investor is planning to build a new recreation complex in the immediate vicinity, consisting of modern cottages and facilities. Perhaps in the future, something resembling a modern hostería or intimate villas will be built here, but that will be a completely different story, unrelated to the Scout heritage of the former camp.

The Scout Station Patyki, named after the Knights of the Order of the Smile, is permanently closed and no longer physically extant in its original form. It offers no accommodations – you won't find any hotels , hostales , or even holiday apartments here. It's a place that lives only in memories and old photographs. This is important information for potential tourists: avoid this location when looking for a posada or any other place to stay. Instead, focus your attention on other, operational facilities in the region.
